Adding Carts
Adding a cart to Manage1to1 creates a container for managing groups of devices together. Once you've created a cart, you can add devices to it and check out the entire collection to users.
To add carts, you need the Add Carts permission assigned to your administrator role.
How to Add a Cart
- Navigate to
Carts > Add Cartfrom the main menu - Fill out the cart information form (details below)
- Click Add Cart to save
After creating the cart, you'll be redirected to the cart's device management page where you can start adding devices.
Required Fields
These fields must be filled out before you can create a cart.
Cart Name *
A descriptive name that identifies this cart. Be specific and clear so other administrators know what this cart is for.
Good examples:
- "Room 205 iPad Cart"
- "English Lab Chromebooks A"
- "Mobile Science Lab"
- "Loaner Pool - Building 3"
Avoid vague names like:
- "Cart 1"
- "iPads"
- "Devices"
Tips:
- Include room numbers, department names, or grade levels
- Indicate if it's a permanent assignment or mobile cart
- Keep names under 50 characters for display purposes
- Use consistent naming across similar carts
Capacity *
How many devices this cart can hold. This helps you track whether the cart is full and manage inventory efficiently.
Setting capacity:
- Enter
0for unlimited capacity - the cart can hold any number of devices - Enter a specific number (like
30) to set a maximum capacity
Common capacity settings:
- Mobile laptop carts: Usually 20-40 devices
- iPad charging stations: Typically 30-40 devices
- Classroom sets: Match your class size (25-35 devices)
- Loaner pools: Variable, often 10-20 devices
- Unlimited: Use for flexible collections without fixed limits
If you set a capacity limit, the system will prevent you from adding more devices once the cart reaches that limit. You'll see the message "This cart is at capacity. Remove a device to add another." You must remove a device before you can add a new one.
Building *
Which school building this cart belongs to. This controls who can see and manage the cart based on building permissions.
Select the appropriate building from the dropdown:
- Choose the building where the cart physically lives
- This determines which administrators can access the cart
- You can only select buildings you have permission to access
Only administrators with access to the selected building will be able to view and manage this cart. Choose carefully! If you assign it to the wrong building, you or your colleagues may not be able to find it later.
Optional Fields
These fields provide additional details but aren't required to create a cart.
Asset Tag
An optional tracking number for the physical cart itself (not the devices in it). This is useful if your district tags the actual cart furniture with asset stickers.
When to use:
- Your district tracks physical cart equipment
- You need to match carts to purchase orders or inventory records
- You want to differentiate between multiple identical carts
Example: If you have 3 identical iPad carts in the same building, asset tags help you tell them apart: "CART-001", "CART-002", "CART-003"
Slot Assignment
This toggle controls whether devices in this cart must be assigned to specific numbered slots.
Optional (Toggle OFF - Default):
- Devices can be added to the cart in any order
- No slot tracking
- Simpler management
- Good for carts where device order doesn't matter
Required (Toggle ON):
- Each device must be assigned to a specific slot number (1, 2, 3, etc.)
- Useful for organized cart layouts
- Helps ensure devices are returned to the correct position
- Good for carts with numbered charging bays
When to require slots:
- Cart has physically numbered slots or bays
- You need devices returned to exact positions
- Students are assigned specific slot numbers
- Cart layout matters for organization
When to leave optional:
- Devices can go anywhere in the cart
- Cart has no fixed organization
- Flexibility is more important than structure
If you enable slot requirements, you'll assign slot numbers when adding devices to the cart. Slots are numbered 1 through the cart's capacity. For unlimited capacity carts, slot numbers can go as high as needed.
Comments
A free-form text area for notes about this cart. Use this space to document:
- Physical location details ("Stored in Room 205 closet")
- Usage instructions ("Only for science classes")
- Special considerations ("Needs overnight charging, unplug during breaks")
- Contact information ("Questions? See Mrs. Johnson")
- Maintenance notes ("Locks are temperamental, jiggle key")
Comments are visible to all administrators who can view the cart.
After Adding a Cart
Once you click Add Cart and the cart is created, the system will:

- Show you an empty cart ready for devices to be added
From there, you can:
- Add devices to the cart
- Edit cart settings if needed
- Check out the cart to a user

Common Questions
Q: Can I change the cart name or capacity later? Yes! You can edit all cart details anytime using the Edit button on the cart list or device management page. You need the Edit Carts permission.
Q: What happens if I set capacity to 0? Zero means unlimited capacity. You can add as many devices as you want to the cart. This is useful for flexible collections that grow and shrink.
Q: Do I have to add devices right after creating the cart? No. You can create an empty cart and add devices later. Empty carts will show "0 devices" on the cart list until you populate them.
Q: Can I assign a cart to multiple buildings? No. Each cart belongs to one building. If a cart moves between schools, update its building assignment by editing the cart.
Q: What if I make a mistake? You can edit most cart details after creation. If you need to delete a cart entirely (for example, you created it by mistake), use the Delete button on the cart list. Note: Only delete carts that were created in error - if a cart has history, it's better to remove devices and leave the cart record.
Q: Can I create carts with the same name? Yes, cart names don't have to be unique. However, we strongly recommend using unique, descriptive names to avoid confusion. Having multiple "Cart 1" entries makes management difficult.
Tips for Creating Effective Carts
✅ Do:
- Use clear, descriptive names that include location or purpose
- Set realistic capacity limits based on physical cart size
- Assign carts to the correct building from the start
- Add helpful comments for other administrators
- Consider whether slot tracking is actually needed
❌ Don't:
- Use generic names like "Cart 1" or "Devices"
- Set capacity too low - allow some flexibility
- Forget to select a building (it's required!)
- Enable slot requirements unless you really need them (adds complexity)
Next Steps
Now that you've created a cart, you'll want to:
- Add devices to your cart - Populate the cart with devices
- Check out the cart - Assign it to a user
- View your cart list - See all carts and their status
